With your help I will produce a three part series on the Port of Seattle covering (1. Its colorful history, (2. Political traits and (3. A look into security.
Colorful History: The Port of Seattle is one of the busiest Ports in the country. How big is it and how much content goes through? This is a look into the history and current state of the Port.
Political Uniqueness: The Port of Seattle is uniquely under the control of its community through a publicly funded by a Port Levy. This means the Port is accountable to the public and must meet stringent transparency laws while handling billions of dollars worth of imports & exports. However coverage of the Port is sporadic at best and heavily dependent on external audit findings. This is a look into why a multi-billion dollar company is publicly owned and what we are getting for our buck.
Security Check: 6 years ago an undercover investigation found "huge gaps in Port security." What kind of security precautions is the Port taking and how have they fared in the years since?
Johnathon Fitzpatrick has been covering Seattle political and transportation issues for the SeattlePI.com, Seattle Metropolitan Magazine, and the West Seattle Blog for the past year.
a 3-part series, 1,000 words each, 1 month per part to give me time to really investigate. Not asking for much, $1,000 pays my rent for those 3 months.
