About Suzi Steffen

I'm a writer, journalist and teacher currently living in Eugene, Oregon.

I'm about to launch my own site that will pursuse statewide arts coverage in Oregon, where I've been writing about the arts for years. The site will probably use Spot.Us to help kick off a few large stories, and I'm so pleased to have Spot.Us as a resource for me and for other journalists attempting to do something beyond the regular freelance life!

I teach Writing for the Arts (#J463Arts on Twitter) and  reporting (#J361 on Twitter) at the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon. I am pursuing many freelance opportunities, including Stage Directions, The Oregonian, Culinate, AlterNet and other print and online publications. For nearly five years, I served as  the performing and visual arts editor at the Eugene Weekly in Eugene.

I often refer to Spot.Us as an example to my students — though we hear bad news about the state of the media all of the time, it's great to see this group of reporters, editors, researchers and others doing something about it.

My Reporting 1 students (new each quarter) blog about Eugene neighborhoods, the media, technology and other topics at the Reporting 1 Blog. Find me on Twitter at @suzisteffen and @reporting1suzi or on LinkedIn.

What is Spot.us?

Spot.Us is an open source project to pioneer "community powered reporting." Through Spot.Us the public can commission and participate with journalists to do reporting on important and perhaps overlooked topics. Contributions are tax deductible and we partner with news organizations to distribute content under appropriate licenses.
