Fire department responseHi John, You may know about this, but just thought I'd add it here: I've recently moved to Alameda from Oakland, and just yesterday as I was walking down Park Street I was stopped by an Alameda Fire Department fireman named Ben, who identified himself as fireman from the West Alameda station at (I think) Webster and something streets. Ben was gathering signatures from Alameda voters to have some kind of voter referendum on the decision to cut fire department funding, which I guess the city recently decided to do. He had some alarming statistics about the delays in emergency response times already caused by reduced fire department funding, and he was critical that the fire department cuts had come before some other budget items he identified as far less critical. Looking forward to the story! Maudie on: How The Economy is Hitting Alameda's City Budgets. |

Correction and additionThe one million plus schooldays missed as a result of Port-related transportation pollution is a state-wide statistic, not an Alameda statistic. In addition, the health costs to Alameda County that are directly attributable to air pollution at the Port of Oakland are $153 million per year. on: Nothing |
