...an honest asessment of the more fundamental question: "What essential service or function do these papers provide that cannot be replaced?"
Investigative journalism can be done by other organizations (ProPublica, NPR radio and TV, etc.). Local classified ads are probably better served by CraigsList too. Job listings have already migrated to the web. Real Estate listings? Internet too. Local reporting? Efforts such as patch.com are trying to address that.
So I would like to see an honest appraisal of what essential or irreplacable service these local papers fulfill that would be missed if they were to disappear.
